At a reception held at the Naval Heritage Centre, Garden Island in May, UNSW Water Research Centre Ph.D. candidate, and Army Reserve Lieutenant, Jacqueline Thomas, received a 2011 Prince of Wales Award.

The Prince of Wales Award is awarded to outstanding Australian Defence Force Reservists for their dedication to Reserve Service. The award provides financial assistant for the Reservist to undertake a training or development activity that is beneficial to both their civilian career and their employer. The Award is heavily contested each year and in 2011, 18 Prince of Wales Awards were presented Australia wide across the three services (Army, Navy and Airforce).

Ms Thomas was awarded nearly $4,000 to present her Ph.D. research at the International Water Association Health Related Water Microbiology conference to be held in Rotorua, New Zealand from the 18th – 23rd of September 2011. As part of the award, she will also undertake a two-week military attachment with the New Zealand Defence Force to transfer knowledge about the response of their Defence Force to the Christchurch earthquake disaster. Furthermore, the Defence Reserves Support Council also recognised Professor Richard Stuetz, Director of UNSW Water Research Centre, for his support of Ms Thomas’s Reserve commitments during her Ph.D. candidature.

Ms Thomas enlisted in the Army Reserves in November 2004 while an undergraduate student at UNSW. She completed the first two years of her military training at the University of New South Wales Regiment, located on lower campus. On graduating from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in February 2007 Ms Thomas was allocated to the Corps of Engineers where her water quality expertise can be utilised. Currently, Jacqueline is posted to the 21st Construction Regiment, Holsworthy Barracks where she is a Troop Commander.
